Lancope, Inc. announces that its director of security research, Tom Cross, has been named a Ponemon Institute Distinguished Fellow. The Ponemon Institute is an independent research organisation dedicated to educating global businesses and government agencies on how to improve their privacy, data protection and information security policies. Ponemon Institute Fellows are nominated and selected by their peers, and represent some of the top privacy and security strategists in the world.

“With more than a decade of experience in cyber security research, Tom Cross is a valuable addition to our distinguished fellows,” said Dr. Larry Ponemon, chairman and founder of the Ponemon Institute. “Throughout his career, he has discovered a number of critical security vulnerabilities in enterprise-class software, and has written papers on a variety of important security and privacy topics. His thought leadership and insights will surely help us further our goal of understanding how organisations can better safeguard their personal and confidential information.”

Cross heads up Lancope’s StealthWatch® Labs Research Team, dedicated to advancing the state of the art in network behaviour anomaly detection with NetFlow, IPFIX and other types of flow data. Prior to joining Lancope, he was Manager of Threat Intelligence and Strategy for IBM’s X-Force Research organization, where he also served as technical editor of the biannual IBM X-Force Trend and Risk Report on the cyber threat landscape.
“Over the years, research from the Ponemon Institute has provided valuable insight into the impact that security and privacy issues are having on consumers as well as IT operations,” said Cross. “I am honored to have the opportunity to contribute to the dialogue that occurs amongst this distinguished group of security professionals.”
