The Green Grid has created a white paper which discusses the importance of involving the facility operator at the early and more critical stages of a data centre lifecycle, and the best way to prepare for this.

In order to optimise its green IT strategy, organisations have a need to think strategically about every stage of their data centre lifecycle and minimise the risk of complications in the later stages. The data centre development team is usually tasked with planning and designing critical infrastructure systems and facility operators are generally involved later on. The Green Grid explains that in order to make sure that these systems continue to work efficiently, it is crucial for a facility operator to be involved in these stages, so that they have all the background knowledge to be able to do this effectively.

The Green Grid’s recent white paper contains key information, which helps in the initial planning and design stages of the life cycle of a data centre and includes operational documents and tools to help with this process. The document includes specific advice involving the different phases of an operations lifecycle, including the design, construction and commissioning phase, and also includes guidance on how to approach the sequence of operations.

For members of The Green Grid consortium, finding opportunities to be more sustainable in every aspect of their business practices is an ongoing interest and the guide provides a new detailed approach to the next step in becoming more efficient in terms of business planning.

“Sharing materials within the consortium is a very important element of our work and we are glad to know that producing materials like this white paper means that organisations have a guide to adopt a more efficient model for facility operations, and to create a more sustainable future,” Lex Coors, Advisory Council and Technical Committee Member, The Green Grid.

The full whitepaper is currently available to members of The Green Grid and will be available to the general public later this year.
