Certification for container data centers from Uptime Institute

Huawei says that its cloud container data center has been awarded Tier III Design Certification by Uptime Institute, the first container data center to receive the certification. This industry recognition strengthens Huawei’s leading position as one of the key providers of cloud data centers, ensuring greater value, reliability and enhanced performance through customer-centric innovation.

Located in the K3 District of Huawei’s Headquarters in Shenzhen, Huawei began development of the cloud container data center project in 2012, where the design was based on Uptime Institute’s Tier standards. The design features a 2N (double system backup) architecture of power distribution and cooling systems, reducing the risk of any single point of failure. Currently supporting a virtual desktop infrastructure with over 10,000 users, the cloud container data center features quick setup capabilities, deployment within one week and a 24-hour automated intelligent operation and maintenance system. The data center is equipped with core energy efficiency technologies including the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system, hot/cold aisle containment, efficient in-row chilled water air conditioning unit, a single cabinet 9kw high-density deployment and intelligent management. These features enable the container data center to achieve a low power usage effectiveness (PUE) rating, even in high temperature environments.

Since its early launch, Huawei’s cloud container data center has been well received by the global market and has been widely adopted in various enterprises and industries including telecommunication, research and education, healthcare, e-government, mining and energy. The solution has been implemented in large-scale deployments across China, Europe, Asia, Middle East, Latin America and Africa. With unique features such as rapid deployment within one-week capabilities, high temperature tolerance between -40°C and +55°C, and a 1.25 PUE rating in automated natural cooling program, the cloud container data center can achieve a 30% saving in total cost of ownership (TCO), making it one of the most popular data center solutions in the industry.

Huawei predicts rapid growth in the cloud data center market, which will become more complex to meet the changing needs of the industry. It will gradually become more difficult for indoor data centers to address customers’ ever changing needs. With greater flexibility, it is anticipated that cloud container data centers will have greater advantages over traditional data centers, leading the trend with fast deployment, disaster backup support, tolerance for harsh weathers and portable deployment. The certification of the world’s first TIER III container data center signifies both the strength of the individual solution and the overall development trends for data center construction and application.
