Mixed modular design meets free cooling

Advania Thor Datacenter has announced the addition of datacenter capacity to its Reykjavik facilities built in conjunction with modular datacenter provider AST Modular. The expansion consists of additional 105 m2 of modular white space which will be cooled with AST Modular’s NFC indirect free cooling technology making Advania Thor DC one of the world’s most energy-efficient datacenters.

Advania Thor Data Center - a brand name under the umbrella of Advania - is an Icelandic ISP which offers low carbon emission hosting options. Advania’s facilities are being built according to a modular approach developed by AST Modular. The project is indeed divided in several phases with the first one completed in 2009 as “proof of concept” and comprised of one 40’ Containerized Datacenter with 17 IT racks at 14kw p/rack plus a datacenter modular room with 50 IT Racks at 7kw p/rack. Phase 2 which is currently being finalized features one 105m2 datacenter modular room plus a separate 45m2 cooling room hosting 8 of Natural Free Cooling Modules in N+1 configuration. The entire data center runs under an integrated SCADA System and achieves a 1,16 PUE thanks to AST’s ultra efficient air to air heat exchangers.

The solution proposed by AST Modular is configurable and upgradable. The additional datacenter space has been built with minimal electrical and mechanical upgrades and finalized in less than 2 months further to the shipment of all needed components from Barcelona to Iceland.
"We have seen a tremendous increase in datacenter space demand in the last 12 months" - declared Ægir Rafn Magnússon, Sales Director at Advania Data Centres. "Iceland is a very competitive country for Data Centers. The huge availability of green and affordable geothermal power combined with low outdoor temperatures and highly skilled IT professionals allow us to go to market with a first in class service at a very low price" – he said.

"We are excited to support Advania in its further datacenter plans” – added Davide Ortisi, Marketing Director at AST Modular. "Advania Datacenters are built according to AST Modular’s core values: modularity, energy efficiency and security. The latest expansion clearly shows that our prefabricated datacenter options – either containerized or modular – help customers achieve a Capex differed growth and generate savings. On the other hand our Indirect Free Cooling NFC will minimize Advania’s Opex and guarantee security since Iceland can be an environment with high concentration of volcanic ashes and external contaminants”.
