Bridging the gap between energy efficiency and scalability

Power management company Eaton has launched several new modular double conversion three-phase UPSs in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) that bridge the gap between energy efficiency and scalability. The new Eaton 93PM units, in power ratings from 30 to 200 kW, combine market-leading energy efficiency with scalability and vertical and horizontal redundancy. As a result, IT professionals and data centre managers can simply and cost-effectively specify, scale and adapt their architecture to future changes in load demands or to new reliability requirements.

The flexibility of the new 93PM UPSs is a result of the units’ modular design. This makes it simple and cost-effective to scale the system as load demands change without increasing the footprint, enabling users to reduce CapEx and take a ‘pay-as-you-grow’ approach. The inclusion of Eaton’s patented Hot Sync® wireless paralleling technology also means a system can be designed, or is scalable, up to a power rating of 800 kw, maximising availability without compromising resilience and reliability.

“The new 93PM UPSs are significant additions to Eaton’s broad and popular portfolio of power protection solutions,” says Cyrille Brisson, EMEA Vice President of Power Quality at Eaton. “In conjunction with our existing products, they mean we now offer unmatched energy efficiency of up to 97% in double conversion mode as well as cost effective solutions to suit everything from the smallest server room to the largest data centre. Whatever size their application is now, or might be in the future, our customers can enjoy outstanding reliability and resilience combined with exceptionally low total cost of ownership.”

The new UPSs offer the lowest possible Total Cost of Ownership by enabling users to take full advantage of the operational efficiency provided by Energy Saver System (ESS) mode. ESS automatically and continuously matches the operation of the UPS to the incoming power quality allowing an efficiency of 99% to be achieved. When required, ESS transitions the UPS seamlessly to double conversion mode in less than 2 milliseconds and delivers an unmatched efficiency of up to 97% whilst at the same time removing any abnormalities in the utility power. The new 93PM UPSs also have a power factor of 1.0 and so enable users to optimise Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE).

The new units also offer maximum deployment flexibility using a fully front-accessible design together with innovative thermal management options of front-to-top or front-to-back airflow, enabling installation against walls, back-to-back, in row or in hot/cold aisle configuration. The front-accessible design also allows quick access for service and maintenance.

Eaton has given careful attention to the usability of its new UPSs, all of which include an intuitive touchscreen that provides essential status information at a glance in both graphical and numerical formats. The new UPSs also incorporate a web interface that allows them to be managed and monitored remotely, and to be easily integrated with facilities management systems.

Supplied as standard with the new UPSs is Eaton’s versatile yet easy to use Intelligent Power Manager (IPM) software, which is fully compatible with all major operating systems and all popular virtualisation platforms, including VMware vCenter, Microsoft Systems Center and Citrix XENCenter.
