SSE Telecoms selecs Zayo Group for London Dark Fibre Network

Zayo Group has won a contract to install a Point of Presence (PoP) network for SSE Telecoms, the network infrastructure and data centre service provider arm of the SSE Group. Zayo has designed and will provision the dark fibre backhaul network for SSE Telecoms, which will connect 21 BT phone and Ethernet exchange points in London and a further exchange serving the Slough area.

The contract supports SSE Telecoms’ plan to extend its network coverage to all major business conurbations across the UK. This programme, known as ‘Project Edge’, will see SSE Telecoms deploy its own high capacity PoPs in 54 additional central business districts, serving almost an additional 106,000 business postcode areas with high bandwidth fibre connectivity.

SSE Telecoms already operates its own fibre network in London, but this new contract will enable it to leverage Zayo’s additional fibre reach, as well as Zayo’s ability to design and build large scale fibre networks, in order to offer high capacity connectivity services to a greater number of London-based businesses. Services in the London area will go live in Q2 2014.

“We selected Zayo for their experience in rapidly deploying networks. This specialisation in dark fibre gave us confidence in their ability to meet both our technical and commercial requirements,” said Chris Jagusz, Managing Director of SSE Telecoms.

“The reach of our London network and ability to rapidly expand to new locations for our customers is the foundation of our Bandwidth Infrastructure business.” said Alastair Kane, Zayo’s European vice-president. “The expanded network meets SSE Telecoms’ requirements as well as provides an opportunity to offer additional services to our base of customers.”

The extension of Zayo’s network into these 22 BT exchanges provides significant diverse connectivity, both between exchanges and to key data centres and traffic exchanges. This expansion brings Zayo’s coverage to 22 BT exchanges and 43 data centres as part of its 499 building footprint in London. London is one of X markets served globally by Zayo’s fibre network.
