Hydro66 & The Node Pole announce construction of 8,000m2 ‘ultra green’ Arctic data centre

Hydro66, a provider of next generation green data centres, announces it is building a new 8,000m2 data centre in Boden, northern Sweden. The modular data centre will be built on a 46,000m2 site and will be served by a new fully redundant 145kV 120MW substation.

Green Philosophy
“We are building a green data centre which is optimised for the Arctic climate and exclusively uses locally generated hydro-electric power.” said Paul Morrison, Business Development Director. “The data centre is being built with the aim of producing the lowest possible carbon footprint throughout construction as well as operation.”

The data centre is less than 500m from a hydro power station and directly adjacent to a new 120MW substation.

Corporate Focus
“Designing our data centre with the needs of corporate multinationals in mind means our clients will benefit from scalable low cost green power without compromises on power density, data integrity or social responsibility” continued Morrison. “Sweden is an attractive location because it provides high geo-political security and stability as part of the EU and mainland Europe.”

The facility will support high power density computing equipment of the type increasingly demanded by corporate IT leaders. Data centre clients will further benefit from being located at the intersection of 4 different regional power grid feeders giving unparalleled scalability, resilience and diversity.

Sweden is rated as the 4th most Internet connected country in the world and the data centre will have multiple low latency routes into all key European connectivity hubs.

Low Cost
“The annual mean temperature of -1.3°C at the edge of the Arctic Circle is a unique opportunity to utilise natural cooling methods for the ultra-efficient design. This combined with some of the lowest input costs for energy in Europe means high quality, low cost, green data centre services are within reach of enterprise IT teams for the first time” added Morrison.

The data centre RFS date is May 2015 with significant expansion planned over the next decade.

“We are very pleased with Hydro66’s data centre investment. Their long-term, sustainable approach in combination with our location and infrastructure makes it a winning concept. We welcome them to Boden and The Node Pole, and are proud that they will use local expertise and resources to set their global plans into action”, says Erik Svensson, CEO Boden Business Agency.

“We have been impressed by Hydro66’s approach and are really excited to be part of their future expansion plans. A colocation services provider with a very clear green focus is a great addition to the data centre market in The Node Pole” says Erik Lundström, CEO The Node Pole.
