One of the first members of the consortium, Interoute, has simultaneously activated its transmission systems present at the site, and is ready to receive requests for connectivity. Fastweb and Retelit are pending the activation of their infrastructure solutions, with other consortium members to follow.
Hosted in the research area of Italtel in Carini (Palermo), the 1,000 square-metre OHM data centre is designed with the most advanced technology systems, which guarantee continuity of service, scalability of internal infrastructure and electrical power supply. Thanks to the modularity of its pre-cabled fibre optic and electric systems, the data centre is characterised by the ease with which its clients can install their equipment in racks or take advantage of those provided by OHM, both quickly and affordably.
Today, the hub is the first neutral, carrier-independent site in the South Mediterranean to house the technology equipment of operators, OTTs, enterprises and public administration, and was established by the consortium’s founding members: Eolo, Equinix Italia, Fastweb, In-Site, Interoute, Italtel, MIX (Milan Internet Exchange), Retelit, SUPERNAP Italia, VueTel Italia and XMED.
Valeria Rossi, president of Open Hub Med said, “This is another step forward in the realisation of a project from the most innovative and ambitious companies in our country. The OHM consortium today boasts the most renowned and illustrious names in Italian networking. OHM has been able to reach this goal thanks to everyone’s contributions in terms of expertise, vision and capabilities. In other words, a true consortium approach has been realised with the activation of the data centre in Carini, the neutral heart of the Hub, the first phase of which has been completed with the addition of the major landing station infrastructure. The goal is to become the Mediterranean’s centre of aggregation and traffic development for traffic coming from the South and East.”
Ms Rossi continued, “The activation of the data centre is a fundamental step forward. Today we’re ready to welcome users to OHM’s network terminals, including CDNs, content providers, cloud providers, digital media providers and all those who would benefit from having an available infrastructure in this strategic location, at both the national and international level.”
