J. Murphy & Sons has chosen Oracle's entire Aconex application suite to support the business as it delivers its ambitious 10-year plan for sustainable growth featuring digital transformation at its core. It is also using the Aconex Connected Cost solution to improve cost, time, and quality controls.

J. Murphy & Sons Limited is a leading global, multi-disciplined engineering and construction company.  Founded in 1951, it directly employs more than 3,000 engineers, professionals, and skilled operatives around the world.

Operating in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Canada, J. Murphy & Sons’ purpose is to improve life by delivering world-class infrastructure. The company provides a range of construction services to building and infrastructure sectors including rail, water, power, and natural resources.

The company is in the third year of a 10-year plan to transform the business, evolving into a matrix-based organisation to deliver strong, well supported operational performance and cementing its position as a tier one contractor and service provider.

As part of this plan, it is investing in a digital transformation program embracing digital tools that better manage information and data across the group. The clear expectation is that this will bring efficiencies and build knowledge capital, which is so important to compete in the modern construction and engineering industry.

The projects that J. Murphy & Sons are involved in vary from small street works within frameworks to large-scale joint venture contracts. These projects often involve multiple teams and are widely dispersed, sometimes in remote or secure locations. As a result, the company needed a digital solution that could bring all of this together without disrupting the business through the implementation process.

Aconex connecting teams in the field; securely managing data in the cloud

“A key facet of our 10-year plan is to adopt a ‘One Murphy’ approach to collaboration across the business. A core principle of this is to ‘Go Digital Together.’ It’s about embracing new technology that fits within our enterprise architecture ecosystem and brings immediate benefits but is scalable to grow with us and our ambitions around information management,” said Alex Jones, Group Head of BIM and Digital Construction at J. Murphy & Sons.

“We chose Aconex because we needed a highly secure, cloud-based, common data environment that was easy to implement, could help to unify our dispersed teams as well as integrate with other Murphy systems. Also, the Connected Cost extension to the core electronic document management system provides visibility into time, cost, and field tools. It proved a differentiator when we reviewed the market and will allow our commercial teams to manage payment applications upstream and downstream, track changes, and link directly with our finance system.”

“We have a focus on continuous improvement and believe innovation is integral to our success,” Jones said. “We saw Aconex as being able to help our business in a number of ways from solutions empowering our workforce in the field to the entire suite providing transparency, control; and security to our partners.”

J. Murphy & Sons developed a mature and forward-looking group information management strategy to meet the demands of modern construction, deliver against client expectations and support its own drive for continuous improvement.

“We are impressed with how J. Murphy & Sons has defined a long-term plan to transform the business with digital transformation as an integral part. The company recently achieved BIM level 2 certification and launched a communications and training plan to support adoption and cultural transition,” said Leigh Jasper, Co-Founder and CEO of Oracle’s Aconex. “J. Murphy & Sons is investing in smart systems and data intelligence, and we are happy to support them on this journey.”
