ABB delivers continuous power availability and efficiency savings for IndoKeppel Data Center’s first project in Indonesia – helping to support major ecommerce and data center growth in the country.

Working together with its local partner, PT Vektordaya Mekatrik, ABB is supporting the region’s data center market by specifying its PowerWave 33 energy efficient UPS to provide an uninterruptable source of electrical power to IndoKeppel Data Center 1 (IKDC1), near to Jakarta, which is a joint development between local Indonesian conglomerate Salim Group and Keppel Data Centers.

While Jakarta and its outlying municipalities currently offer 75 MW of data center colocation capacity, it is attracting attention from several major players and demand is expected to quadruple in size over the next three to five years.

This will largely be driven by greater connectivity and major expansion of the e-commerce sector, which has grown by 37 percent over the last 12 months[1], in addition to the Indonesian government committing to implementing IoT infrastructure technology for roads, streetlights, and traffic signals. All of which will result in an increased need for innovative data centers to support data consumption growth.

IKDC1 will be developed over three phases in a 7-hectare data center campus and its first phase will feature a gross floor area of approximately 105,300 square feet. The facility - a high-availability carrier-neutral data center - is targeted for operational delivery in 2021 and will offer future development capacity for clients to scale up their IT infrastructure effectively in Indonesia. When in operation, it will offer concurrent maintainability standards for power and cooling for hyperscale cloud players, financial institutions, and local enterprises.

Brian Johnson, ABB Data Center Segment Head, comments: “A combination of Indonesia’s own internet revolution, government connectivity targets and attention from global data center operators looking for new locations in which to expand, has created significant growth in the region over the past few years. Figures show that this is expected to continue at a compound annual growth rate of around 11% during the period 2019-2025.1

“As a result, the Indonesian colocation data center market will continue to grow to support this need, which means that scalability will be key to offering further capacity with minimal upfront costs. Ensuring the UPS is scalable in line with expansion plans will enable the efficient generation of revenues as each new phase opens, which is why ABB’s PowerWave 33 was the perfect solution for this prestigious project.”

Ideal for medium-sized data centers, office and building power protection, process automation and other critical processes, ABB’s PowerWave 33 is an online double conversion UPS, which delivers continuous power availability to network-critical infrastructures like those being built across Jakarta to accommodate the colocation market growth. Offering maximum power protection, the PowerWave 33 has a small footprint and uses less energy than comparable products, thus delivering significant savings. It offers up to 96% efficiency in double conversion or 99% efficiency in eco-mode across a wide load range.

Brian continues: “We understand our customers’ need for secure power to keep critical infrastructure running 24/7. They need smart and reliable power protection, and this is where ABB’s portfolio plays a critical role to ensure uptime. ABB’s PowerWave 33 delivers a great combination of energy efficiency and overall power performance for the data center industry and is perfectly suited to the IndoKeppel Data Center project.”
