SURF has selected HPE and Salumanus to pioneer its new-generation network infrastructure. This collaborative endeavour aims to vastly improve bandwidth, predictability, and resilience essential for supporting research and education across the Netherlands.

To tackle emerging challenges, SURF will progressively overhaul its network. The new architecture offers 800GE, 400GE, and 100GE connectivity, leveraging OpenZR+ technology from Salumanus to further extend bandwidth and distance capabilities.

HPE's role focuses on the backbone and border domains. The deployment of PTX Series Routers will bridge SURF’s IP peering with NetherLight, incorporating vRR for simplified routing and Corero’s anti-DDoS protection, ensuring secure academic connectivity.

Key to this transformation is the shift from CWDM to DWDM technology, a vital step for boosting link capacities beyond 100G. This solution will provide high-speed connections without additional transponder needs, optimizing power and space consumption.

Meanwhile, Nomios will ensure seamless hardware integration across vendors, enhancing system coordination and lifecycle management. Their involvement facilitates SURF’s continuous innovation alongside maintaining vendor diversity.

With such strategic partnerships, SURF is poised to support an efficient, scalable, and secure network capable of fulfilling the future demands of the educational sector.
