Commvault has launched the Commvault Cloud Unified Data Vault, a cloud-native service aimed at enhancing their resilience and protection capabilities. This new service is designed to manage data written using the S3 protocol, offering a unified framework for safeguarding enterprise-grade data. The introduction of an S3-compatible endpoint managed by Commvault aims to allow organisations to apply policy-driven, immutable protection to emerging AI workloads and custom tasks, without needing to install agents or create new data management silos.

In today's digital landscape, S3 is often employed as the default export solution for backups, used across various platforms such as CockroachDB, Greenplum, Docusign, and monday.com. However, these backups often remain in isolated buckets with varying retention and lifecycle policies, which can complicate compliance and recovery processes. The Unified Data Vault seeks to address these issues by providing a straightforward solution for moving S3-compatible backups into secure, air-gapped storage managed by Commvault, ensuring that the data benefits automatically from encryption, immutability, and policy-based governance.

The Unified Data Vault aims to provide the following benefits:

  • Agentless simplicity: Allows applications, databases, and workflows to write directly to Commvault-managed S3 endpoints without needing agents or custom scripts.
  • Automated enterprise protection: Offers encryption, immutability, deduplication, and retention controls after backups are initiated.
  • Developer-ready programmability: Integrates with native S3 workflows and APIs to facilitate DevOps automation.
  • Centralised policy governance: Ensures consistent protection and compliance policies across diverse cloud landscapes.

The need to implement resilience measures for these expansive datasets is key. Unified Data Vault aims to provide centralised automation, immutability, and air-gap protection to manage S3 data efficiently.
