EU Data Act spurs SMEs to rethink cloud strategies

The EU Data Act is pushing SMEs and MSPs towards a multi-cloud, multi-vendor approach to mitigate vendor lock-in while fostering business agility.

The EU Data Act has officially come into force, compelling cloud service providers to facilitate seamless switching for customers. This initiative is poised to address data portability concerns and mitigate vendor lock-in challenges. As CIOs across industries navigate these adjustments, the need for a multi-cloud strategy becomes apparent.

This year has seen AI drive up computing costs, even as cloud inflation stabilises. Businesses and Managed Service Providers (MSPs) are thus urged to adopt flexible solutions that prioritise organisational goals.

Mark Appleton, from the ALSO Group, emphasises the importance of SMEs recognising these changes. Agility remains the cornerstone of SME competitiveness. Rapid adaptation to technological advancements without breaking the bank necessitates strategic precision.

"Vendor lock-in places hurdles on that agility," warns Appleton. " so whenever an organisation commits its entire operation to a singular cloud ecoysstem, it limits both innovation and budget solely with that particular vendor." The limitations on using top-tier tools from diverse providers can stifle growth and prevent businesses from leveraging best-in-class features.

"It’s often perceived that large hyperscalers position their one-stop-shop ecosystems as less expensive, but this is a misconception," Appleton continues. "The simplicity of an all-vendor ecosystem is at the cost of long-term shortfalls, making SMEs reliant on cost creep as they lack simpler alternatives. In essence, you’re accepting what’s good enough for your security or data backup systems, instead of being able to choose a custom tool that performs better or is at a better price.

To counteract these challenges, SMEs are encouraged to sidestep generic bundles and work with IT partners in selecting optimal cloud solutions. This approach promotes a flexible, modular technology stack that adapts to specific needs and strategic goals.

Appleton further reassures that managing multiple vendors needn't complicate existing systems or billing. Through a central cloud hub, MSP partners can simplify management while maintaining vendor diversity.

"The cloud distributor handles the complexity," explains Appleton. MSPs thereby focus on delivering client-centric value. By acting as trusted advisors and using cloud marketplaces, they can carve unique solutions that set businesses apart from competitors. Enhanced white-label capabilities afford MSPs the chance to personalise their offerings, lending authenticity to customer experiences.

In a concluding reflection, Appleton urges SMEs to evaluate whether current cloud strategies are empowering business objectives or locking them down to specific providers. Similarly, MSPs are advised to redefine their roles as strategic allies, embracing IT’s evolution from a solitary ecosystem to a multi-vendor framework.

He asserts, "Embracing this flexibility is key to controlling costs, building future-proof enterprises and driving innovation through enabling business goals direcly" Businesses that embrace this flexibility will undoubtedly lead in the new era of cloud-driven innovation.
