Bridging the AI expectations gap: how I&O leaders can align with business goals

Netskope's report highlights the communication gaps faced by I&O leaders in enhancing AI capabilities.

Netskope's recent research uncovers a notable disconnect between infrastructure leaders and senior management regarding the readiness for artificial intelligence (AI) demands. A minority of I&O leaders (38%) feel confident in their current infrastructure's capability to support AI, and even fewer (18%) are certain about having the team and budget needed to meet their organisation's expectations.

This comprehensive survey of global I&O leaders highlights several key findings:

  • Soaring Expectations: The survey reveals that 80% of I&O leaders view their IT infrastructure as pivotal in fulfilling business objectives. However, the expectations from senior leaders have amplified over the past year, with 83% of I&O leaders feeling increased personal pressure.
  • Alignment Disconnect: A significant 63% of respondents report a lack of involvement in strategic IT decision-making, pointing to a 20% knowledge gap concerning their CEO's or CIO's objectives. In addition, 37% describe their roles as "reactive," indicating a reactive rather than proactive approach.
  • Mutual Barriers: 61% acknowledge their CEO's frustration with the transparency of IT infrastructure, suggesting a need for clearer communication and understanding.
  • Misaligned KPI Priorities: The research highlights a disparity between the priorities of I&O leaders and senior executives. While security, visibility, and cost are prioritised by executives, I&O leaders feel greater attention should be given to resilience and performance.
  • Reactive Mindsets: Over half (60%) of I&O leaders note a defensive stance in infrastructure investment.

Despite the potential of AI shaping future transformation strategies, it appears tackling long-standing issues remains the focus. Priorities cited include enhancing the security and performance of remote access (43%) and boosting network visibility (35%), both of which surpass AI adoption concerns (34%).

Strategies for Better Alignment

The research outlines five strategies for closing the gap between I&O teams and the C-suite:

  • Translate technical infrastructure decisions into business-relevant outcomes to foster a shared understanding.
  • Engage proactively in strategic planning for future-ready infrastructure design.
  • Promote architectural simplicity to counteract inefficient, Band-Aid-like solutions.
  • Ensure transparent reporting to demystify technical operations for senior management.
  • Reposition I&O as a catalyst for secure and agile AI adoption, reducing executive anxiety.

Overall, fostering clearer communication and strategic alignment between infrastructure leaders and senior management is imperative for actualising AI's potential and transforming infrastructure into a strategic advantage rather than a constraint.
